MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP
ALL TIME JAZZ GREATS TAKE ON THE BIGGEST POP HITS OF TODAY
This Summer 2022, the MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP embarks on an exceptional European Tour from June 28th to July 23rd. The tour covers Austria, Denmark, Latvia, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France. The supergroup features an international stellar cast of musicians that includes three of America’s greatest jazz legends of all time Billy Cobham, Randy Brecker, and Bill Evans, in addition to the bass virtuoso Linley Marthe, and the knighted Danish jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky. MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP will take on the biggest pop hits of today and approach them as modern jazz standards, including songs by The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Anderson Paak, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, and the likes
The MODERN STANDARDS project was initiated by Niels Lan Doky who for most of his career has been a strong advocate for renewal of the jazz standard repertoire. Throughout his vast discography, he has experimented extensively with interpretations of contemporary pop songs, and arguably more so than any other jazz artist since the original jazz standards were conceived. The repertoire commonly referred to as “Jazz Standards” consists mainly of pop songs from the 1930s and 40s reworked by jazz musicians at the time, to offer the general public a radically different perspective on widely popular songs. The jazz renditions eventually outlived the original versions and jazz musicians continued to play and record these same songs over and over and eventually began creating renditions of each other’s renditions, instead of embracing brand new songs. Ultimately everyone forgot about the original versions and decades later the songs became permanently identified as the classic repertoire of jazz. The MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP will revive this old tradition and take on the biggest pop hits of today and approach them as modern jazz standards.
The world-class saxophonist and producer, Bill Evans, who made his debut on the international music scene in the 1980s with Miles Davis. Toured and recorded with the likes of John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, and Mick Jagger to name a few. Evans has released 26 solo albums, received Grammy nominations, and been a part of countless collaborations and tours.
Billy Cobham was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. He came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 70s with trumpeter Miles Davis. Generally acclaimed as one of the greatest drummers of all time, his explosive technique powered some of the jazz fusion genre’s most important early recordings.
Aside from performing, arranging, composing, and producing music Niels Lan Doky has worked as a film director, author, venue owner, speaker, and he is Knighted by HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. International press have called him "the best pianist of his generation" and “one of the most important pianists that European jazz has given us in the last 45 years”
7x Grammy award-winning Jazz trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker has helped shape the sound of jazz, R&B and rock for more than four decades. His performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists from James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Parliament/Funkadelic to Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, and Jaco Pastorius.
Linley Marthe is the last in the line of great bassists (including Jaco Pastorius) of the bands of the late great Joe Zawinul, who called him “a phenomenon”. Originally from Mauritius, he has wowed audiences around the globe with his incredible musicianship, most recently with the Billy Cobham Band and previously with Omar Hakim, Jean Luc Ponty and many others.
