Gary Bartz / 90s New York Hip Hop @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
To say that it was a true privilege to have Gary Bartz as part of JAZZ/TAKEs series @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art would be an understatement. The audience was through the roof and so were we. It was a special treat to have Gary Bartz alongside Calle Brickman on piano, the dane Kasper Tagel, and Anders Mogensen on drums in a performance of jazz interpretations of 1990s New York Hip Hop with songs by A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang Clan, Nas and Jay-Z.
The quartet performed a captivating set of the following songs:
Butter (A Tribe Called Quest) - samples from “Young a Fine” & “Gentle Smiles Saxy”
Cold Blooded (James Brown) - sampled in” Gimme The Loot” by Notorious B.I.G.
Rise (Herb Alpert) - sampled in” Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G.
Chim Chim Cheree - sampled in “Method Man” by Wu Tang Clan
Mind Rain (Joe Chambers) - sampled in “N.Y. State Of Mind” by Nas
Dead Presidents II & Hard Knock Life (Jay-Z)
Check The Rhime (A Tribe Called Quest)
As encore: I Can’t Help It - sampled in “Breakadawn” by De La Soul
We very much look forward to having the legend Gary Bartz back in the near future. If you missed the show you can enjoy a selection of photos from the concert below taken by the talented photographer, Kannan Palanisamy.
The concert was an exciting musical journey through jazz takes on songs by the icons of New York’s 1990s Hip Hop movement, many of whom became known for their extensive and pioneering sampling of jazz records.. Gary Bartz is actually among the numerous jazz artists whose albums have been sampled by Hip Hop artists and producers. Aside from his famed 1970s collaboration with Miles Davis at the Isle Of Wight festival and on albums such as Live-Evil, Bartz has worked with Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders and Charles Mingus and has been a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and of McCoy Tyner's band Expansions. The multiple iterations of the Miles Davis band that Bartz was a part of also included peers such as Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Chick Corea and Airto Moreira. Since then, Bartz formed his own band Ntu Troop, which combined jazz, funk, and soul. In 2015 the BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award was presented to him at a special ceremony at The Kennedy Center in the US.
