We are thrilled to announce our pop-up jazz club June 25-July 10 at one of Copenhagen's most prestigious and iconic venues, featuring international jazz of the highest order and an exclusive dining experience at the Copenhagen Opera House restaurant Almanak, with its spectacular fifth floor panoramic city and harbourfront view of Copenhagen (w/ outdoor terrace on wind-still days). Two shows nightly at 17:00 (5 PM) and 20:00 (8 PM).
BUD POWELL - “IN COPENHAGEN”
GUEST OF HONOR: JØRGEN LETH (on opening night June 25, first show)
The late great American jazz pianist Bud Powell was one of key musicians who innovated the be-bop movement in the 1940s, alongside fellow jazz icons such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Come 1962, Bud Powell began appearing in Copenhagen, playing with a local rhythm section that comprised the young Danish bass phenomenon, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, only 15 years old at the time, and fellow-Danes Jørn Elniff or William Schiøpffe alternating on drums.
During this time, Powell made several recordings with his Danish trio, and Jørgen Leth, a young local jazz fan, seized the opportunity to approach Powell about appearing as a main character in an experimental short film. Powell accepted, and the film "Stop For Bud", released in 1963, became Leth's first film, marking the beginning of his compelling career as an avant-garde filmmaker. Often referred to as a key influence to his younger peer Lars Von Trier, Jørgen Leth's body of work is unparalleled and and has placed him permanently in our collective consciousness as one of Denmark's most significant cultural personalities.
It is therefore with great pride that we welcome Jørgen Leth as our guest of honor on the opening night of this run dedicated to live performing and reinterpreting the great album BUD POWELL IN COPENHAGEN, recorded in Copenhagen in 1962 and released on the Danish record label, Storyville. As another of Leth's well-known passions, the Tour De France, hits Copenhagen this week, we are grateful that his busy schedule could accommodate a visit to our pop-up jazz club at Almanak i Operaen.
Before attending the show, we highly encourage everyone to find and view Jørgen Leth's short film STOP FOR BUD (aka STOPFORBUD) featuring Bud Powell, with narration by Dexter Gordon.

ABOUT JAZZ MASTERWORKS SERIES:
In 2014, Niels Lan Doky began using the term “Jazz Masterworks Series” to present live performances and modern re-interpretations of iconic albums that have defined the genre at the now defunct The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen. “Unlike Classical music, jazz is mostly improvised and as a result we don’t have written scores of masterworks that can be read and played by other artists. But I have concluded that album recordings are the jazz world's equivalent, hence the Jazz Masterworks Series concept was born.” Stellar casts of American, European and South American musicians from the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective meet up periodically to perform and re-interpret selected masterworks albums from Jazz’s iconic canon.
The Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective wishes to thank their sponsors:
Main sponsor: Augustinus Fonden.
Additional contributions: William Demant Fonden, Knud Højgaards Fond, Statens Kunstfond, and Gangstedfonden.
