ABOUT:
This Fall 2022, the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective premiered its most recent project entitled the JAZZ/TAKES SUPERGROUP. Four legendary musicians embarks on a musical journey based on one of the NLD IJC’s most successful concepts, the Jazz/Takes concert series. While the creative task of Jazz/Takes is complex, the concept is simple: Interpreting the canons of well-established genres of contemporary music - through the lens of jazz. The JAZZ/TAKES SUPERGROUP plays a mixture of their own original compositions and jazz interpretations of flagship songs from genres such as 90s Grunge (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden), 70s Disco (Chic, Abba, Sister Sledge), French Electronic (David Guetta), Heavy Metal (Metallica), 90s Hip Hop (Nas, Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest), 70s NY Post Punk (Television, Patti Smith, The Ramones), 80s UK New Wave (New Order) and more. The series normally resides at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and has featured some of the greatest legends in jazz. The JAZZ/TAKES SUPERGROUP will bring this enticing project to other parts of Europe.

Line-up: Harvey Mason Bill Evans, Darryl Jones and the knighted Danish jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky.

THE STORY BEHIND THE CONCEPT:

Two years ago, a unique collaboration was launched between one of the art world’s most prominent institutions - the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark - and one of today’s most creative and prolific musicians - pianist and producer Niels Lan Doky - yielding an innovative and highly successful concert series entitled “Jazz/Takes”. The Louisiana Museum of Modern art is among the most visited art museums in the world (with 750,000+ annual visitors pre-covid) and is included in Patricia Schultz’ book “1000 Places To See Before You Die”. Aside from varying exhibitions, the museum has a permanent collection of major works by many icons of modern art, such as Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Andy Warthol, David Hockney and Cecily Brown, among others.

Inspired by artistic organizations such as The Royal Danish Ballet, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Cirque du Soleil, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective is an association of prolific musicians from three different continents, Europe, North America and South America - who are devoted to presenting unique and exclusive jazz performances of the highest order, which they curate and produce themselves and which cannot be heard anywhere else. The collective is led by the knighted jazz pianist and producer Niels Lan Doky, who has been called “the best pianist of his generation” and has collaborated with a who’s-who in jazz.

For the first two seasons of the series, 2020 and 2021, entire concerts were devoted to Doky’s modern instrumental jazz arrangements of flagship songs from each genre: 1970s New York Post Punk, 1980s U.K. New Wave, 1990s Seattle Grunge, 1990s New York Hip Hop, Heavy Metal, 1970s Disco and French Electronic - each concert headlined by one of the most acclaimed figures in jazz: Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Mike Stern, Gary Bartz, Pat Metheny Group veterans Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico and more. The monthly concerts have so far been held exclusively at the Louisiana Museum - to sold out crowds and standing ovations only. But starting in the Fall of 2022, the JAZZ/TAKES SUPERGROUP will take the concept on the road in Europe.
