About:
This Summer, the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective embarks on an exceptional and ambitious concert hall tour of Denmark with a project entitled MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP. The tour covers Aarhus, Copenhagen and Holbæk, and features an international stellar cast of musicians that includes three of America’s greatest jazz legends of all time Billy Cobham, Randy Brecker, and Bill Evans, in addition to the French bass virtuoso François Moutin, and the knighted Danish jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky. The tour begins August 24th at Musikhuset Aarhus’ largest concert hall and culminates in Holbæk on August 26th for a special concert there hosted by Holbæk Jazzklub, one of Denmark's oldest and most prolific jazz presenters. In between the supergroup visits the iconic Tivoli Glass Hall Theatre in Copenhagen.

The MODERN STANDARDS project was initiated by Niels Lan Doky who for most of his career has been a strong advocate for renewal of the jazz standard repertoire. Throughout his vast discography, he has experimented extensively with interpretations of contemporary pop songs, and arguably more so than any other jazz artist since the original jazz standards were conceived. As a showcase of his values in this heritage, NLD offers this monthly series of brand new jazz takes on current songs - top hits from the weeks that preceded each post. The repertoire commonly referred to as “Jazz Standards” consists mainly of pop songs from the 1930s and 40s reworked by jazz musicians at the time, to offer the general public a radically different perspective on widely popular songs. The jazz renditions eventually outlived the original versions and jazz musicians continued to play and record these same songs over and over and eventually began creating renditions of each other’s renditions, instead of embracing brand new songs. Ultimately everyone forgot about the original versions and decades later the songs became permanently identified as the classic repertoire of jazz. The MODERN STANDARDS SUPERGROUP will revive this old tradition and take on the biggest pop hits of today and approach them as modern jazz standards, including songs by The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Anderson Paak, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and the likes.
