ABOUT

Jean “Toots” Thielemans (1922-2016) made the harmonica into a widely respected instrument in the practice of jazz music worldwide, as jazz historian Ted Gioia called it, "championing the humble harmonica into a legitimate voice in jazz.” Toots’ album “Affinity” released in 1979 marks the historic encounter between the American pianist and jazz icon, Bill Evans (1929-1980), and Belgian harmonica player, Toots Thielemans (1922-2016). The album is considered to be the artistic pinnacle of Bill Evans’ career and the fact that it is one of his most popular recordings is often attributed to Toots Thielemans, whose presence, according to music critics, made Bill Evans’ music more accessible. For decades Toots Thielemans was a regular visitor in Copenhagen and met Niels Lan Doky through a local students of his. Niels and Toots had a good and instant personal chemistry and soon after their first cup of coffee together they were jamming in a nearby Copenhagen studio. For this Jazz Masterworks Series of the historic album “Affinity”, Niels Lan Doky is joined by the legendary drummer Victor Jones, who is best known as the drummer of Stan Getz for many years, a two time Grammy nominee and one time winner, and a Oscar nominated artist. Thielemans iconic harmonica will be interpreted by Danish harmonica player Mathias Heise, who is one of the most spectacular new young talents that the Danish jazz scene has produced in a long time and a multi-awarded musician. The three will be accompanied by Gabor Bolla on saxophone and Tobias Dall on acoustic bass.
