Join us on this exciting musical journey through jazz takes on songs by the icons of New York’s 1990s Hip Hop movement, many of whom became known for their extensive and pioneering sampling of jazz records: A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang Clan, Nas and Jay-Z. The concert will be headlined by one of the jazz world’s greatest living legends of the alto saxophone, Gary Bartz. Aside from his famed 1970s collaboration with Miles Davis, Bartz has worked and played with some of the most legendary players in jazz. Also, he was awarded the BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award in 2015. For this JAZZ/TAKE, the NLD IJC musicians joining Gary Bartz (US) will be drummer Anders Mogensen (DK), bassist Kasper Tagel (DK) and pianist Calle Brickman (SE).
Besides Gary Bartz’ JAZZ/TAKE concert, you can also experience the legendary alto saxophonist in a rare masterclass for elite students from The Danish National Academy of Music on Wednesday, August 11th at 11:30. Find your ticket to the masterclass here.

American jazz/fusion guitarist Mike Stern is widely acclaimed as one of the most innovative, influential and original guitarists of his generation. When first exposed to a larger audience as a member of Miles Davis' celebrated comeback band of the early 1980s, Stern’s personal and refreshing blend of rock, blues and jazz influences didn’t sound like anything anyone had ever heard before. This brand new 2021 project is a natural extension of our previous work with Stern, with the challenge of JAZZ/TAKES on Heavy Metal. All of the jazz/fusion music that emerged in the 1970s was heavily rock-influenced and to a large extent guitar driven, with groups like Return To Forever and John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra. Join us as we explore the music of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest through the lens of jazz. Joining Mike Stern on stage are the two French twin brothers, both virtuosos in their own right, bassist François Moutin and drummer Louis Moutin. The great tenor saxophonist, Gábor Bolla, completes the line-up.

As one of the most iconic rhythm sections of modern jazz history, bassist Steve Rodby and drummer Paul Wertico gained widespread international acclaim as long time members of the Pat Metheny Group, which they both joined in the early 1980s. The Rodby/Wertico sound is an integral part of some of the most revered and greatest masterpiece albums by the Pat Metheny Group, such as “First Circle”, “Still Life (Talking)”, “Letter From Home” and “The Road To You”. It is a great honour and rare privilege to have them appear together as featured guest artists with the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective for this JAZZ/TAKE on 1970s Disco, with jazz interpretations of songs by Donna Summer, CHIC, Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, ABBA and Sister Sledge.
Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico will also host a rare masterclass the day after their JAZZ/TAKE concert for elite students from The Danish National Academy of Music on Saturday, October 9th at 11:30. Find your ticket to the masterclass here.

Commonly, the idea of French electronic music starts with Jean-Michel Jarre’s pioneering work. Decades later we now enjoy an impressive panorama of French electronic music. For this particular JAZZ/TAKE, using the exact same instrumentation as on the groundbreaking Miles Davis album, “Kind Of Blue”, we will experience jazz sextet arrangements of themes by French electronic music artists Daft Punk, Air, Jean Michel-Jarre, Justice and David Guetta. NLD IJC regulars include trumpeter Luca Aquino and alto saxophonist Fredrik Kronkvist, tenor saxophonist Gábor Bolla, Tobias Dall on bass and Thomas Clausen on piano - and guesting with us for the first time, the great American drummer Greg Hutchinson, whose reputation as one top jazz drummers in the world today makes his appearance eagerly anticipated.
Besides this unique JAZZ/TAKE concert, you can also experience the great drummer Greg Hutchinson in a rare masterclass for elite students from The Danish National Academy of Music on Saturday, November 6th at 11:30. FInd your ticket to the masterclass here.
