ABOUT
Join us on this exciting musical journey through jazz takes on songs by the icons of New York’s 1990s Hip Hop movement, many of whom became known for their extensive and pioneering sampling of jazz records: A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang Clan, Nas and Jay-Z. The concert will be headlined by one of the jazz world’s greatest living legends of the alto saxophone, Gary Bartz - who is also among the numerous jazz artists whose albums have been sampled by Hip Hop artists and producers. Aside from his famed 1970s collaboration with Miles Davis at the Isle Of Wight festival and on albums such as Live-Evil, Bartz has worked with Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders and Charles Mingus and has been a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and of McCoy Tyner's band Expansions. The multiple iterations of the Miles Davis band that Bartz was a part of also included peers such as Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Chick Corea and Airto Moreira. Since then, Bartz formed his own band Ntu Troop, which combined jazz, funk, and soul. In 2015 the BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award was presented to him at a special ceremony at The Kennedy Center in the US. For tonight’s concert, the NLD IJC musicians joining alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (US) will be drummer Anders Mogensen (DK), bassist Kasper Tagel (DK) and pianist Calle Brickman (SE).

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
From the beginning, the founder, Knud W. Jensen, intended for the museum to be a home for modern Danish art. But after only a few years he changed course, and instead of being a predominantly Danish collection, Louisiana became an international museum with many internationally renowned works.
Louisiana’s close contact and collaboration with the international arts and cultural milieu has since been one of the museum’s greatest strengths. And also one of the main reasons that it has been possible for Louisiana to present an exhibition program that has resonated so strongly with the public over the years. Louisiana has thus achieved a standing as one of the world’s most respected exhibition venues, and in the future, it will be able to attract exhibitions and artists at a level that few other museums – either in Denmark or abroad – can match.
Knud W Jensen once said: “The more opportunities for experience that the program offers, the more Louisiana lives up to its idea – to be a ‘musical meeting place’ and a milieu that is engaged in contemporary life.”
