Lenny White / 80s UK New Wave @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Last Friday we had the pleasure of presenting one of the all-time greatest drummers, Lenny White, as part of JAZZ/TAKEs series @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. The evening featured 2 completely sold out concerts with corona restrictions in place and during these time of COVID-19 affecting the world we could not be more thankful to be able to present music for an audience. We submerged into JAZZ/TAKEs on 1980s U.K. New Wave songs by The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and Simple Minds. The concert was led by Mr. White who performed alongside pianist Calle Brickman, Canadian bassist Graig Earl, Swedish trumpet player Anders Bergcrantz, and Bergcrantz countryman on alto saxophone Fredrik Kronkvist.
The quintet performed a captivating set of the following songs:
Never Let Me Down Again (Depeche Mode)
Boys Don’t Cry (The Cure)
Don’t You Forget About Me (Simple Minds)
This Charming Man (The Smiths)
True Faith (New Order)
Blue Monday (New Order)
Just Like Heaven (The Cure)
As a surprise, Niels Lan Doky replaced Calle Brickman on the piano for the last song, the encore, which was a breathtaking version of “Policy Of Truth” by Depeche Mode. If you missed the show you can enjoy a selection of photos from the concert below taken by the talented photographer, Zuhal Kocan.
The multi-Grammy Award-winning drummer Lenny White whose work with Miles Davis (on the groundbreaking 1969 album “Bitches’ Brew”) and the iconic 1970s group Return To Forever (with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke) positions him as one of the founding fathers of jazz/fusion.
