Alvin Queen / 70s New York Punk @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective was lucky enough to present Alvin Queen @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art amidst corona affecting the entire world. the legendary drummer Alvin Queen (formerly with Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver, and George Benson) hosted a program of JAZZ/TAKESs on 1970s New York Punk with renditions of songs by Talking Heads, Television, Blondie, Patti Smith, and The Ramones. This concert will also feature the spectacular French bass virtuoso, François Moutin, among others. Mr. Queen performed with a trio of musicians from the collective, Swedish pianist Calle Brickman, the explosive French bassist François Moutin, and Gabor Bolla from Hungary on tenor saxophone.

The last song on the set list was an encore after an ecstatic audience clapped the four back to their instruments to perform Patti Smith’s song “Dancing Barefoot” with special guest, Niels Lan Doky, replacing Calle on piano. Three of the greatest African-American drummers in modern jazz, Alvin Queen, Lenny White and Billy Cobham, will each lead their own concert alongside selected members of the NLD IJC to take us on a musical journey through jazz interpretations of repertoire and genres not previously translated through the lens of jazz, “Jazz/Takes” (jazz renditions) of 1970s New York Punk, 1980s U.K. New Wave and 1990s Seattle Grunge. All three concerts will be held at the spectacular Louisiana Museum of Modern Art at the east coast of Sealand, Denmark in respectively October, November and December of 2020.
