ABOUT:
It is with great excitement that the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective announces its Fall 2024 program at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
On November 8, experience an intimate and introspective journey with Niels Lan Doky on solo piano for the very first time in Denmark. Doky performed solo at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York decades ago and had a solo tour in Japan. Now, 25 years later, he is ready to embark on a new journey with his new concert series, “The Radius Of Now,” showcasing his original compositions and improvisational ‘Explorations’ - spontaneous, abstract-poetic creations that delve deep into the present moment, rendering each performance a singular and extraordinary experience that cannot be replicated. This solo performance is a rare opportunity to witness the raw and unfiltered talent of one of jazz's luminaries.
Hailed as “the best pianist of his generation” (by Swing Journal, Japan), “fresh and provocative” (by the New York Times), and “one of the most important European pianists of the last 50 years” (by El Diario, Spain), Danish-born Niels Lan Doky has graced the most prestigious stages globally (Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center, Blue Note, etc.), collaborating with the greatest jazz luminaries (Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, David Sanborn, Ray Brown, and many more), and classical orchestras such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Copenhagen Philharmonic. Furthermore, Doky was knighted by HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 2010. As the esteemed Bösendorfer Artist, Doky’s unparalleled tapestries of notes transport the instrument’s unmatched beauty to concert stages worldwide, inviting audiences to experience the sparkling storytelling within his music. Despite its deep virtuosity and complexity, his music is simultaneously profoundly emotional and broadly appealing.
Niels Lan Doky’s solo piano concert is just the tip of the iceberg of our Fall 2024 series. Join us on August 30th, when we explore Jimi Hendrix through the lens of jazz with the great Mike Stern on guitar, on September 20th, when we explore Kurt Cobain & Nirvana through the lens of jazz with saxophone icon Bill Evans o leading an international stellar ensemble and on December 6th when Amy Winehouse is interpreted by the great Manu Katché on drums and Felix Pastorius on bass among others.
Jazz/Takes Series 2022 at Louisiana:
Aug 30: Jazz/Take on Jimi Hendrix
Sep 20: Jazz/Take on Kurt Cobain & Nirvana
Dec 6: Jazz/Take on Amy Winehouse
LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
From the beginning, the founder, Knud W. Jensen, intended for the museum to be a home for modern Danish art. But after only a few years he changed course, and instead of being a predominantly Danish collection, Louisiana became an international museum with many internationally renowned works.
Louisiana’s close contact and collaboration with the international arts and cultural milieu has since been one of the museum’s greatest strengths. And also one of the main reasons that it has been possible for Louisiana to present an exhibition program that has resonated so strongly with the public over the years. Louisiana has thus achieved a standing as one of the world’s most respected exhibition venues, and in the future, it will be able to attract exhibitions and artists at a level that few other museums – either in Denmark or abroad – can match.
Knud W Jensen once said: “The more opportunities for experience that the program offers, the more Louisiana lives up to its idea – to be a ‘musical meeting place’ and a milieu that is engaged in contemporary life.”
