About:
We’re celebrating 1959 - one of the greatest years in jazz history. That year three of the most popular, acclaimed and enduring albums in jazz were released.
On August 17th trumpeter Miles Davis released what would become known as one of the ultimate masterpieces of the genre and the best selling instrumental jazz album of all time - the groundbreaking album “Kind Of Blue”. A few months later, on October 5th, the innovative bassist and composer Charles Mingus released “Ah Um”, the album that yielded his arguably best and most famous compositions. Finally, on December 14th, Dave Brubeck released “Time Out”, an experimental record exploring odd time signatures, which against all odds and expectations became one of the biggest commercial successes in jazz, largely driven by the hit single “Take Five”.
Join us as curated casts of jazz musicians from the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective live perform and do their modern reinterpretations of each of these three iconic albums, playing the exact same pieces as on the original recording and in the exact same order - and with the same instrumentation: Time Out (May 26), Kind Of Blue (May 27) and Ah Um (May 28).
Today’s show features a live performance of the MILES DAVIS “KIND OF BLUE” album.
Majorgården (which means “Major Farm”) with its incredibly beautiful seaview of Kattegat and Sweden, was built in 1749 directly on the beach on the Northern coastline of Zealand (Sjælland). In the 1800s the farm was the home of the grandparents of Danish symbolist sculptor Rudolph Tegner (and coincidentally, it is today located near the latter’s museum and statuepark in Dronningmølle). In the early 1900s, Danish author Alexander Svedstrup visited the farm and was inspired to integrate it into the plot of his novel "Erik Gudmand" in which he named the farm “Majorgården” . As a result it became the farm’s official name in the 1930s when it served as a summer hotel and restaurant (with room for up to 70 guests and with a staff of 10). Due to its beautiful seaside location and ideal direct placement by the beach, it became quite popular among Danish as well as Swedish guests at the time. A very frequent guest was Swedish author and Nobel Prize laureate Pär Lagerquist. Today the farm operates as office spaces and houses the fashion brand Neo Noir. We are thrilled to have Majorgården included as one of our SOUND DUES 2022 venues.
